Recently, because of the increasing crime incidents in Mumbai and the cases being discussed on social media, a question has come up among many people: Is Mumbai really safe for women?

Almost every female traveller who joins our Dharavi Tour or Mumbai City Tour asks this question: Is Mumbai truly safe for women in India?

My answer is always the same: Yes.

Mumbai is one of the safest cities for women. But like every city, Mumbai also has its own set of social rules, especially for solo travellers.

For women who are visiting Mumbai to explore the city, I would like to share a few things. All the tips mentioned here are practical, real, and focused on helping you stay safe.

From emergency contact numbers to understanding which lanes to avoid, how certain areas feel, and how much and with whom you should interact, I have covered everything in detail.

This guide is written from real on-the-ground experience, not from a laptop far away.

Understanding Mumbai Geographically

Before talking about safety, let’s first understand Mumbai geographically.

If we look at present-day Mumbai, it is mainly divided into two parts: South Mumbai and the Mumbai Suburban District.

South Mumbai includes areas that are famous for places like the Gateway of India, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Marine Drive, Churchgate, Bhuleshwar, Byculla, and Malabar Hill.

Mumbai Suburban District includes places such as Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Malad, Borivali, and several popular malls and residential neighbourhoods.

I am introducing you to these geographical areas because if you are new to Mumbai and planning to stay here for some time, choosing the right location matters. If you are looking for safe accommodation, hotels, or rental places, then suburban areas are generally considered among the safest options for solo female travellers.

On the other hand, South Mumbai can be an excellent place to stay if your visit is mainly focused on sightseeing and exploring the city’s iconic attractions.

Tour Guide Tip: Some slum areas in Mumbai are best experienced with a trusted local tour guide who can provide authentic insights and ensure a meaningful visit.

Transport Safety for Solo Women in Mumbai

Uber/Rapido: You can safely book transportation through online platforms such as Uber, Rapido, and Ola. These companies provide a reliable and respectful travel experience, making them one of the first choices for many foreign travellers.

Mumbai Metro is also a safe, secure, and modern mode of public transport. Metro stations and coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras, and security personnel are present, making it a comfortable option for women travelling alone.

Local trains are also considered safe, but if you are travelling during peak hours, usually between 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM or 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, you may experience heavy crowds, pushing, and limited seating availability. During these hours, comfort may not always be guaranteed.

Auto-rickshaws, which are available across suburban Mumbai, are another safe and comfortable travel option. They also offer an open-view experience, allowing you to enjoy the city’s atmosphere while commuting.

Tour Guide Tip: Save the Uber app on your phone before you arrive in Mumbai. It works instantly, is affordable, and is one of the safest transport options for solo women at any hour.Otherwise, travel with our tour guides to explore Mumbai safely

What to Wear in Mumbai for Solo Travellers

If you are a female solo traveller, then you should definitely wear clothes that blend well with Mumbai’s lifestyle and suit the local culture.

For example, if the season is summer, then you should wear lightweight cotton clothes that cover most of your body. Wearing comfortable shoes is mandatory, and sunglasses are also essential.

If you are visiting during the monsoon season, then avoid slippery slippers. You should also avoid transparent or revealing clothes. Carrying a raincoat is recommended, and instead of carrying cash for expenses, it is better to keep online payment options like UPI available.

If you are visiting during winter, then you should carry sweaters, jackets, or clothes that can be layered easily. Comfortable and proper shoes should also be a part of your outfit.

Tour Guide Tip: Mumbai is a modern city, but dressing according to the weather and local surroundings can make your travel experience much more comfortable and convenient.

Digital Safety Tips for Solo Women

In 2026, your phone is your biggest safety tool.

Always share your live location with a trusted contact using Google Maps or WhatsApp. Keep your phone charged, and carry a small power bank in your bag. Save these numbers in your phone before you arrive: Women’s Helpline 1091, Police 100, and Ambulance 108.

Use UPI or cards for payments wherever possible rather than carrying large amounts of cash. This keeps you from being a target for pickpockets in crowded markets.

If someone asks for your personal social media handle, it’s best not to share it. Also, avoid sharing too many personal details with people you have just met.

Most Important Things to Remember

Carry a Scarf or Light Shawl , It’s Useful and Helps You Blend In

If you are an NRI or a foreign traveller, do not forget to carry a scarf, stole, or light shawl, as it can be useful in many situations and also helps you blend in with Indian culture.

Before asking someone for help or directions, take a moment to observe their personality and behaviour. If the person appears trustworthy, only then approach them.

Avoid crossing roads while wearing earphones or headphones, as staying aware of your surroundings is very important.

Avoid staying in poorly rated local hotels and always prefer well-reviewed accommodations.

If you are exploring Mumbai with a guide, then there is very little to worry about, as a local guide can help you navigate the city comfortably and safely.

Prefer travelling through main roads instead of isolated lanes.
