Why was Bombay renamed Mumbai?

Mumbai didn’t start out as one city. It was actually seven different islands Bombay, Mazagaon, Parel, Worli, Mahim, Little Colaba, and Colaba. The Portuguese showed up in 1507 and called the area Bombaim. Fast forward to 1661: the British arrived and got these islands as part of a royal dowry.
