1.About Our Elephanta Caves Tour
When you book your Elephanta Caves trip with Cityscape Mumbai Tours, you are not just booking a ticket to the island. You are booking a complete, private, and thoughtfully curated experience that handles every detail so you can simply enjoy the journey.

Your day starts either from our fixed meeting point near the Gateway of India, which is PizzaExpress, Dhanraj Mahal, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Marg, Colaba, Mumbai 400001, or from your hotel, airport, or cruise port if you have opted for our pickup service. We offer hotel pickup, airport pickup from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and port pickup from Alexandra Dock, Fort, Mumbai. All of these are available for selection during checkout.

Once your group is together, we head to the Gateway of India, where you spend around 15 to 20 minutes taking in this magnificent colonial landmark and getting your first views of Mumbai Harbour. Then you board the Elephanta Caves ferry for a scenic crossing to Elephanta Island, also known locally as Gharapuri.

On the Elephanta Cave Tour, your expert English-speaking guide takes over. This is where the real experience begins. Your guide will spend approximately 3 hours walking you through the cave complex, explaining the history of each cave, the meaning behind each sculpture, the mythology connected to every panel, and the architectural genius that went into carving an entire temple complex out of a solid basalt hillside 1,500 years ago.

Your tour price covers all entry and admission fees. This includes the Gateway of India entry and the Elephanta Caves entry. Guide fees, ferry charges, parking, fuel, and all applicable taxes are also included. What you pay at booking is what you pay. Nothing more.

Photography is welcome throughout the tour, so bring your camera and capture the details of these extraordinary carvings up close. We also provide a water bottle to every traveller so you stay hydrated across the full tour duration.

At the end of the Elephanta Caves trip, your group returns to the meeting point. If you have booked the hotel transfer service, we will drop you directly at your hotel or airport after the tour.

One more thing worth mentioning. We give you the privilege of customising this Elephanta Caves tour to fit your preferences. You can combine it with any of our other Mumbai tours, add special requirements, or adjust the itinerary based on your group's interests. We are flexible because every traveller is different.

2.About Elephanta Caves
Tucked away on a small island in Mumbai Harbour lies one of India's most extraordinary ancient sites. The Elephanta Caves, or as locals call them, Elephanta Gufa, are a collection of magnificent rock-cut temples carved directly into the dark basalt rock of Elephanta Island. Dating back to somewhere between the 5th and 8th centuries AD, these caves have stood quietly for over 1,500 years while the city around them transformed into one of the world's great metropolises.

The island was originally called "Gharapuri", meaning "City of Caves". When Portuguese explorers arrived in the 16th century, they discovered a large stone elephant near the shore and renamed the island Elephanta. That original stone elephant has since been moved to the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai, but the name has stayed with the island ever since.

The Elephanta temple complex was recognised as a UNESCO monument in 1987, when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition placed the Elephanta Caves among the most important cultural and historical sites in the world, right alongside monuments like Agra Fort, Hampi, and the Ajanta and Ellora Caves. Visiting a UNESCO monument of this scale and significance while in Mumbai is an experience that goes far beyond ordinary sightseeing.

There are 7 caves in total, split into two groups. The five Hindu caves are the main attraction. The most famous of these is Cave 1, known as the Great Cave or the Shiva Cave. It is enormous, stretching about 39 meters deep, and it houses some of the most remarkable rock-cut sculptures ever created in India. The centrepiece is the Trimurti, also known as Maheshmurti, a 6-meter-tall three-headed bust of Lord Shiva. The three faces represent Shiva as Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer. It is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of ancient Indian art and is impossible to stand in front of without feeling genuinely moved.

Beyond the Trimurti, Cave 1 contains stunning panels depicting Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, Shiva in his Ardhanarishvara form as the half-male, half-female union of cosmic energies, Shiva's marriage to Parvati, and Shiva's victory over the demon Andhaka. Each panel is a complete story told in stone, and having a knowledgeable guide beside you to explain the mythology makes the difference between seeing images and truly understanding them.

The two smaller Buddhist caves on the eastern hill are older and simpler in style, containing water cisterns carved into the rock that once supplied the entire monastic community on the island.

What makes the Elephanta temples so extraordinary from an artistic and architectural perspective is that nothing was built here. Everything, including the columns, the shrines, the sculptures, and the ceiling, was carved directly into the living rock of the hillside. The craftsmanship involved in producing work of this scale and detail using hand tools over 1,500 years ago is truly extraordinary.

The scenic Elephanta Caves ferry ride that connects you to this UNESCO monument is itself part of the experience. As you cross Mumbai Harbour and the island grows on the horizon, there is a genuine sense of travelling back in time.

Entering the Elephanta Gufa

Walking into the Elephanta Gufa for the first time stops you in your tracks. Cool air, soft light and towering stone columns carved from solid basalt surround you. This is a living rock temple, hand carved over 1,500 years ago, and it feels exactly like that.

The Trimurti - The Three Faced Shiva

The walls of the Elephanta temple are covered in large panels telling stories from Hindu mythology. Shiva as Nataraja, Ardhanarishvara, his marriage to Parvati, his victory over Andhaka. Your guide brings every panel to life so you leave understanding, not just seeing.

On the eastern side of the hill sit two older and quieter Buddhist caves that most visitors walk past. These are part of the original Elephanta Gufa complex and contain ancient water cisterns carved into the rock. A small but genuinely fascinating stop on your Elephanta Caves trip.

The Views from the Island

Between the caves and the ferry back, pause and look out across Mumbai Harbour from the hillside. The Mumbai skyline stretches across the horizon, a reminder of how far this UNESCO monument feels from the city that surrounds it, even though it is just one ferry ride away.
